THE COLLY COMMUNITY YOUTH & HEALTH HUB
A community development for health approach to addressing the causes and consequences of poor health in Collarenebri.
We believe that local people are the experts in the needs of their own communities.
We believe that people should be the focus of everything we do.
We believe that place is critical in addressing the reasons why people become unwell or injured.
We believe everyone has the right to health, and reasonable access to care.
We believe that we cannot address the burden of disease in our community unless we also address the causes of disadvantage.
The Hub was a joint initiative of the Foundation and Collarenebri community to create a one-stop-shop for health, human and community services. Housing these services in a single location not only reduces backend costs, it also allows practitioners and community to share knowledge and ideas about the challenges in the community and how to solve them.
People-centred care goes beyond the focus on the patient (illness-centred) or the person in isolation, and embraces the community as a whole.
Walking groups, Men's Sheds, Women's Art collectives, local school sporting clubs, recreational programs for elderly people all play a part in supporting good physical and mental health. We cannot achieve good health care for individuals without a healthy and active community.
Maarubaa Galariibaraay-gu recognises that supporting health people means engaging, and addressing the health needs of, the whole community.
Every community is different and Galariibaraay is not different. Our plans target the specific circumstances of our community by engaging with the local community as experts and active participants in their development and the implementation of programs.
The hub is committed to the human rights of all people. We celebrate diversity, promote inclusion and encourage participation of individuals and the community in all aspects of their community's health and wellbeing. We integrate human rights norms and principles in the design, delivery and evaluation of our services, programs and advocacy.
Up to 80 percent of our health is determined by the circumstances in which we are born and live. A lack of educational opportunity, local jobs and training contributes to a range of disadvantages that directly contribute to poor health outcomes in the Collarenebri-Galariibaraay community.
The Hub has embraced community development as a means to advance the social, economic and environmental conditions that lead to poor health with the aim of improving health by improving the circumstances in which we live.
