Jeremy Goff, Acting CEO of The Healthy Communities Foundation Australia (HCFA), spoke with ABC Broken Hill about suicide prevention in rural communities, as the ongoing drought continues to affect many parts of southern Australia.
In the interview, Jeremy outlined HCFA’s Commonwealth-funded Suicide Prevention Program, describing it as successful because it is both community-led and place-based. Support is delivered directly within local communities, drawing on local knowledge and using culturally appropriate methods to reach people who might otherwise be overlooked.
He welcomed the Commonwealth Government’s $1 billion commitment to mental health reform, calling it a significant opportunity to improve rural mental health services. However, he emphasised that for meaningful change to occur, funding must flow to community-based, locally governed models that reflect the unique needs and strengths of each region.
