Suicide Prevention Program

The National Rural and Remote Suicide Prevention Program (NRRSPP) is a federally funded program by the Department of Health and Suicide Prevention Australia to aid in addressing the rising suicide rates in rural and remote communities.

 

The program was designed in consultation with rural and remote communities based on their needs in supporting their communities prevent suicide.

 

The program is run by people who live and have worked in rural and remote Australia and has provided rural and remote people the opportunity to upskill and provide suicide prevention services and training to their communities.

​

This program is tailored and designed to be flexible and adaptable to fit in with the communities it is servicing and is a complimentary service to support rural and remote communities.

What the NRRSPP includes

CRISIS SUPPORT PROGRAM

The program provides people support to manage their everyday life after or during a personal crisis that is impacting on their usual mental health and daily functioning, they do not need a diagnosed mental health condition, they can just be feeling overwhelmed and need extra support.

HEALTH PROFESSIONAL UPSKILLING & TRAINING

We have partnered with Black Dog Insitute (BDI) to provide fully funded training in Advanced Training in Suicide Prevention (ATSP). This education is designed to upskill health professionals in each community to be able to provide quality suicide intervention and care to their community. ​

COMMUNITY EDUCATION

We have partnered with the National Rugby League (NRL) to provide fully funded education for school children from year 3 - year 12 through their State of Mind program. This education also includes providing ‘community scrums’ that will be open to ALL members of the community and provide tips and tricks for people to manage their wellbeing.

COMMUNITY CAPACITY BUILDING

Our community capacity building program helps empower communities to identify ways that they can actively work in the suicide prevention space. We will assist by funding Mental Health First Aid trainings (MHFA), SafeTALK trainings and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) for communities at request.

Training Available

​

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) - ASIST is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first-aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognise when someone may be at risk of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants don’t need any formal training to attend the workshop—ASIST can be learned and used by anyone.

 

safeTALK / safeYARN - safeTALK is designed for anyone age 15 or older, including many in more formal helping roles. The steps learned in safeTALK have helped participants from all walks of life be alert to situations where suicide thoughts may be present. safeYARN is designed for Indigenous communities to be suicide alert and is delivered in a culturally appropriate way. Health First Aid (MHFA) - The Standard Mental Health First Aid course teaches participants how to provide initial support to another adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received, or the crisis resolves. Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adults, how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem and the treatments and supports available.

 

Youth Mental Health First Aid (Youth MHFA) - The Youth Mental Health First Aid course teaches participants how to provide initial support to a young person (aged 12–18) who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received, or the crisis resolves. Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of common mental health problems in adolescents, how to recognise and respond to an emerging or worsening mental health problem, and the treatments and supports available.

 

Older Person’s Mental Health First Aid (OP MHFA) - The Older Person Mental Health First Aid course teaches participants who work with, care for or support adults aged 65+ how to provide initial support to someone who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

 

My Toolbox to Wellbeing - Personalised in-depth training sessions that allow participants to build basic resilience, confidence in knowing where to go for help, a better understanding of themselves & their mental well-being and tangible tools that they can use to maintain well-being and problem-solve. My Toolbox to Wellbeing has three courses tailored to Primary School Students, High School Students and the community/businesses. During these courses, attendees will learn various skills and tools to improve their mental health. This is covered over six separate sessions.
